Dandridge is a relatively small town in Jefferson County, TN that is alive with a rich history that dates back over 500 years. Incorporated in 1793, it is the second oldest city in the state of Tennessee and is essentially centered around the junction of SR 92, US Route 411, US Route 70, with I-40 and TN-92 intersecting in the northern reaches of the town. This rich history and convenient location (not to mention competitively priced lake view lots) make Dandridge attractive to potential buyers.

Dandridge's Present Helps Bring its Rich Past
History to Life

It seems as though every inch of Dandridge's 5.3 square miles is saturated with a rich history. In the 1500's, a Native American chiefdom known as the Chiaha lived in the Dandridge area, on Zimmerman's Island, which is now buried beneath the waters of Douglas Lake. Spanish settlers followed and then other Euro-Americans moved in.

In 1793 it was officially incorporated and named after the maiden name of the first First Lady, Martha Dandridge Washington.

Dandridge is also rich in Civil War history and relics and was saved from being virtually flooded completely out of existence in 1942 by the Tennessee Valley Authority flood control project when then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was petitioned to save a town that is the ONLY one named after our first President's beloved wife.

This project created Douglas Lake when the Douglas Dam was begun in February of 1942. There was an urgent need for electrical power for the Manhattan Project, located in nearby Oak Ridge, TN, and the French Broad River, the largest tributary of the Tennessee River, had been identified as a potential source of hydroelectric power.

The dam was completed in just over a year, setting a world record for a project of that size.  Douglas Lake is just over 43 miles long, with a surface area of over 30,000 acres and 555 miles of shoreline. The dam was capable of generating up to 115,000 KW of power.

The Town of Dandridge in the present day

Today, Dandridge is a quaint, beautiful town that embraces an exciting past and looks forward to an even richer future. Dandridge homes have missed much of the fall-out of the busted real estate bubble and offers affordable lake-view and lakefront properties. Its central location makes for an easy commute to regional commercial hubs.

Tourists and residents alike enjoy their rest, relaxation and recreation at local attractions like:

  • Smoky Mountain Balloon Adventures
  • Dandridge Golf & Country Club
  • Touring the Hillcrest Orchard (865-397-5273)
  • Fishing, hiking, relaxing and water sports on Douglas Lake
