When Jefferson City was still named Mossy Creek, it served as a supply point for early settlers and explorers. Much later on, in 1901, the city's name was formally changed in honor of former President Thomas Jefferson. The city is also home to the historical Baptist Carson-Newman College campus, which was built in 1851.

Jefferson City's Historical Highlights from Ancient Times to Modern

Long before Jefferson City or even Mossy Creek existed, the land was home to Native American tribes. When settlers and explorers arrived in the area, they left traces, but no deep historical marks until the Peck family arrived in 1788 and took up residence in an abandoned fort of some kind until their own log cabin could be built. Even though fear of Indians was rampant at the time,  this "ancient" real estate was highly desirable, attracting an estimated 100 families over the first decade.
