Newport, TN is about 10 miles southeast of an area that was once known as "Forks-of-the-River". This was an apt name, since Newport is located along the Pigeon River, where the Great Smoky Mountain Foothills make their way into the French Broad and the Nolichucky drainage basins. Breathtakingly beautiful, the official Great Smoky Mountains National Park has its boundary about ten miles to the south of the town.

Newport's History from Ancient Times to Modern

Centuries ago, the Great Indian Warpath ran through what is now Newport, leading to ancient hunting grounds favored by the Cherokee, who once inspired fear but eventually made peace with locals. In the year 1880, a Canadian by the name of Alexander Arthur came to the area with ambitious plans to log the Pigeon Valley via a series of dams that would take the beautiful logs from the higher elevation all of the way down to Knoxville. While the residents tried to warn him of the volatile nature of the river, all of the man's financial dreams were washed away when less than a decade latter a cloudburst let forth a flood that broke down the dam and ended the company virtually overnight.
