Once ruled by the Cherokee tribe, two battles for possession eventually led to government intervention that resettled the Cherokee west of the Mississippi and made the former Cherokee-owned real estate into public land, available for homesteading or outright purchase. From the 1790's on, the citizens of Strawberry Plains have had an uncanny way of turning hard work into social activities, ranging from rail splitting to log rolling down to molasses making and quilt creating.
